What we know for certain

Three things are certain and none of them is a fireworks display. The date: 31 December 2026, a Thursday. The place: the Han River runs through the middle of the city, and its banks are where people gather. The rules: nothing published, so nothing promised.

We looked on the city tourism portal on 2 November 2026 for a 2027 New Year programme and found none. The festival calendar still lists 2026 material, and the only 2027 references were in image file names.

Why the bridge is quiet that night

The Dragon Bridge fires at 21:00 on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, plus major public holidays. 31 December 2026 is a Thursday, so under the published rule there is no show that evening.

New Year's Day, 1 January 2027, is a Friday. Under the published weekend rule the show is scheduled that evening; whether the city runs anything extra is not published, so check the official page on 30 December.

What people usually do

Without a published programme, the evening is what you make of it: dinner on the river side, a walk along the promenade, and, on past form, crowds gathering near the bridge and the market streets after 22:00.

The practical advice is the same as for any busy evening here: eat at 19:00 rather than 21:00, keep the car for the parts you cannot walk, and do not plan a 23:30 ride across the river.

Where to check, and when

The city tourism portal is the page that will carry any programme first, and it is the one we check. Hotels know about road closures before websites do, because they are told.

Our advice is specific: check on 30 December, not in November. A programme published in the last week is normal here, and planning around a November page would be planning around nothing.

If you want a quiet New Year, the beach strip at My Khe is five kilometres from the river and a different evening entirely: dinner, a walk on the sand, and no crowd.

Building an evening without a programme

Start with what you control: a table at 19:00, a walk from 20:30, and a place to be at midnight that is within walking distance of where you sleep. Everything else depends on an announcement that has not happened.

If a programme appears in the last week, it will almost certainly be on the river side, and the roads around the bridge will close. Planning to be on foot after 22:00 is the safest bet either way.

If nothing appears, the evening is still a good one: the promenade is lit, the restaurants are open, and the city is full of people doing the same thing.

New Year's Day, 1 January 2027

New Year's Day falls on a Friday, which means the bridge show is scheduled that evening under the weekend rule — and, if the city treats the day as a major public holiday, more likely than usual to run.

It is also a day when the museums and the Marble Mountains are open and the beaches are full of Vietnamese families; a good day to do the things that need daylight.
