My Khe in the morning, and what changes by nine

The beach costs nothing, the water is flattest before seven, and by 09:00 the same sand is too hot to cross barefoot.

Short answer

Swim at 06:30. The water is flattest, the light is soft, and the beach belongs to local families doing exercises. My Khe is 4.7 km from Han Market, six minutes by Grab, with no entry ticket — you pay only for beds, umbrellas and food.

Why the morning works

My Khe faces east, so the morning is the calm side of the day: the wind has not built, the water is flat, and the sun comes from behind the beach rather than into your eyes. It is also when the beach belongs to the city rather than to visitors.

Between 06:00 and 07:30 there are groups doing exercises, swimmers in caps, and coffee sellers on the sand. It is the one hour when you are a guest in a working beach rather than a customer on a resort strip.

Getting there, and what it costs

My Khe is 4.7 km from Han Market — six minutes — or 6 km from the airport, ten minutes. From the An Thuong strip it is a walk of ten to fifteen minutes depending on where you stay.

There is no entry ticket. What you pay for is everything around the sand: a sunbed and umbrella from a beachfront operator, food and drink, and the Grab. We do not print those prices — they are set per operator and per season — so ask before you sit down.

Sea conditions vary by month; August is when red flags appear most often.

By nine, it changes

The change is not gradual. Between 08:30 and 09:30 the sand heats up, the shade fills, and the light goes from photographic to punishing. In June and July the average maximum is 34.9°C and 34.4°C, which is why locals are gone by nine.

If you are not a morning person, the second window is 16:00 to sunset. It is warmer, busier and the light is better for photographs, but the water is choppier and the flags go up more often.

After the swim

Breakfast is the reward for the early start: the seafood places on the beach road are quiet, and the coffee is better than it has any right to be. By 08:30 you have done the thing most visitors do at four in the afternoon, in half the heat.

If you have sand in places you did not plan for and a museum afternoon ahead, an hour indoors before lunch fixes both — three branches, open 8:30–20:30, prices from 300,000₫ for the foot spa.

Swimming, tides and the way the beach works

My Khe's shelf is gentle — you can stand a long way out — and the sand is fine enough to walk on without shoes before the sun hardens the surface. That combination is why the morning swim works for people who are not confident swimmers.

Tides move the usable strip rather than the water quality: at low tide you walk further to reach depth, and at high tide the beach narrows toward the road. We do not publish tide times here because they change daily and a printed table would be wrong by the time you read it — your hotel can tell you the high tide for tomorrow.

After rain, the water near river mouths carries debris for a day or two, and the flags are the only reliable signal. In the wet season that means checking the beach before you commit to a swim rather than after.

Where along the beach to sit

My Khe runs for kilometres, and the stretch changes character every few hundred metres: the middle, near the main access roads, is where the operators and the crowds are; the northern end toward Son Tra is quieter and has fewer beds but more shade from the trees behind the sand.

If you want the local version of the morning, walk north for ten minutes: fewer umbrellas, more people swimming laps, and the pagoda on the headland in view. That is the stretch we would choose, and it costs nothing but the walk.
