January averages 83 mm over 14 rain days, with 25.2°C by day and 19.7°C at night. It is the driest month of the cool season and a good month to walk a city in — but check where Tet falls, because a week of closures around the lunar new year changes what is open.

What January is like
January is the turn of the season. Rainfall falls to 83 mm over 14 rain days — a quarter of December's total over two thirds of the days — and the average maximum is 25.2°C with nights at 19.7°C, the coolest nights of the year.
For a visitor this is the most comfortable walking month: the heat that flattens a midday in June is gone, the streets dry out, and the light is clear. It is also the month when the city fills with visitors from Korea, Japan and northern Vietnam.
Tet, and the closure week
Tet is the lunar new year and it moves: it can fall in late January or in February. For roughly a week around it, small businesses close, many family restaurants shut, and the people who run the service economy go home. Museums and large attractions usually stay open; the small places you want to eat at often do not.
We do not publish Tet dates or a closure list for a future year on this page, because the city has not published a 2027 programme we can verify. Check the official holiday notice before you book flights that land in the last week of January.
What to do with dry streets
This is the month to do the walking things properly. The Marble Mountains (9.7 km, 14 minutes, 07:00–17:00, 40,000₫ for Thuy Son) are better in January than in any other month because the stone is not radiating heat and the lift queue is short.
Hoi An is 32.2 km south, about 30 minutes; the old town runs 09:00–21:30 in summer and 09:00–21:00 in winter, and the lanes are at their least crowded after 18:00. With dry evenings, January is the month when the walk back along the river is a pleasure rather than a dash.
- Son Tra peninsula by motorbike — the road is dry and the views are the point.
- The Cham Museum, 07:30–17:00, 60,000₫, for the one indoor hour the month still needs.
- A beach morning at My Khe: 4.7 km from Han Market, six minutes, no ticket.
Nights and layers
The evenings are the surprise. At 19.7°C with wind coming off the river, a t-shirt at 20:00 is a mistake people make once. One light layer solves it, and it doubles as the jacket for Ba Na, where the summit runs 17–20°C in summer and colder in winter.
Getting around in the easiest month
January's reward is that everything is close. The airport is 6 km from the An Thuong strip — ten minutes — so a late arrival costs you nothing. Han Market to My Khe is 4.7 km, six minutes. The Marble Mountains are 9.7 km, fourteen minutes, and Hoi An is 32.2 km south, about half an hour with clear roads.
The one journey that needs planning is Ba Na. The cable car base is 31.8 km west, about 29 minutes, and the park opens at 08:00 and closes at 22:00. In January the cloud tends to hold off longer than in October, which is why this is the month to go early and stay late if you want the bridge without a queue.
Do not over-plan the transport. Grab works across the city and quotes before you book, which is the only number that stays true on the day — we do not print fares here for that reason.
