Da Nang in December: 272 mm, 25°C, and the busiest fortnight

December is cooler and drier than November, and it is the busiest month of the year. What the weather does, and what to book before you arrive.

Short answer

December averages 272 mm over 21 rain days, with 25.3°C by day and 20.5°C at night — the coolest air of the year. Rain is lighter than November but the fortnight around Christmas is the busiest of the year, so book rooms and the Ba Na ticket before you fly.

What December is like

December is the month the weather turns. Total rainfall drops to 272 mm from November's 486, and the average maximum falls to 25.3°C with nights at 20.5°C — the coolest of the year, and cool enough that an evening by the river wants a layer.

The rain-day count stays at 21, which surprises people. Fewer millimetres over the same number of days means shorter, lighter rain: a wet morning rather than a wet day. That is why December feels more usable than the raw rainfall suggests.

The beach question

People ask whether December is a beach month. The honest answer is that it is a sit-by-the-sea month rather than a swim-all-day month: the air is 25°C, the beach is quiet, and My Khe is 4.7 km from Han Market, six minutes by Grab.

We do not publish sea temperatures, because we could not find a checked series for this coast and a number invented here would be worse than none. What we can say is that the air is warm enough to sit out and the flags, not the calendar, decide whether you swim.

The pattern worth knowing: hotels fill from 20 December, restaurants cope, and the cable car at Ba Na is where the queue actually is. Buying a ticket does not buy you a place in the queue — arriving before 08:00 does.

Rain days, honestly

Twenty-one rain days in a 31-day month sounds like a washout. It is not: it means most days have some rain, usually a band that passes in an hour or two. The practical rule is the same as October — one indoor anchor per day, and the outdoor hours whenever the sky allows.

Christmas week, specifically

The last ten days of December are their own season inside the month: the same 25°C, but hotels at their annual peak, the riverfront decorated and busy after dark, and a city full of visitors from places where December means something else entirely.

The evenings are the part that works whatever the rain does. The riverfront and the streets behind it are where the decorations and the crowds are, and the Dragon Bridge show runs at 21:00 on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and on major holidays — two minutes of fire, three of water, and then everyone goes to dinner at once.

One practical note for the fortnight: book the evening meal you care about and leave the others loose. Restaurants near the river run at capacity between 19:00 and 21:00, and a table you did not reserve is a walk to the third or fourth place rather than a disaster.

What December costs you in time

The trade a December trip makes is time for weather. Everything is close — the airport is 6 km from the An Thuong strip, Han Market to My Khe is 4.7 km — but the rain adds minutes to every hop, and the Christmas traffic adds more after dark.

The practical buffer is 20 minutes on any evening trip between 18:00 and 21:00 in the last ten days of the month. It is the difference between arriving for the bridge show and watching it from a car.

Questions people ask

Is December a good time to visit Da Nang?

Yes, with the right expectations: 25.3°C days, lighter rain than November, and the busiest fortnight of the year around Christmas.

Can you swim at My Khe in December?

Some days yes, some days no — the flags decide. The air is warm enough to sit out either way.

How does December compare with January?

January is much drier — 83 mm against 272 — and about the same temperature. If you want dry streets, January is the better half of the pair.

Do I need a jacket?

For the evening, yes: 20.5°C with wind off the river feels cooler than the number. A light layer is enough; nobody needs a coat.
